Computer Science
Back to Subjects MenuWhat is it to be a Computer Scientist at BCHS?
The most important aspect of computer science is problem solving, an essential skill for life. Students study the design, development and analysis of software and hardware used to solve problems in a variety of business, scientific and social contexts. Because computers solve problems to serve people, there is a significant human side to computer science as well.
Subject Overview - Year 7-11
Year 7, 8 and 9
This will be a bespoke curriculum that at first ensures that all students understand how to use a computer, and use it safely and appropriately.
After learning the correct use of a computer, KS3 students will progress to learn a basic understanding of different areas from the National Curriculum.
This will lay the foundations for a GCSE in Computer Science.
Year 10 and 11
We will be working on the OCR specification of GCSE Computer Science. This means:
- Two papers, one focusing on computer systems and one with a focus on programming, computational thinking, and algorithms.
- Encourages valuable thinking and programming skills that are extremely attractive in the modern workplace.
Subject Overview - Sixth Form
We will be continuing with the OCR specification for A Level Computer Science. This means:
- Two papers, one focusing on computer theory and one with a focus on programming, computational thinking, and algorithms. (Like GCSE)
- Coursework where each student decides on his or her own project worth 20% of the course to help personal development.
Enrichment
What BCHS offers that most schools do not is our ability to deliver a variety of programming languages.
- During KS3 you will learn how to program using Python
- During KS4 you will learn how to program in VB.net
- During KS5 you will learn to program in C# and PHP
This coupled with a fantastic curriculum and dedicated teachers means that anyone wanting to progress in Computer Science will leave BCHS with every advantage.
How do we contribute to PHSEE, British Values and SMSC?
The main way Computer Science contributes is through teaching students the appropriate way to use a computer.
Every year students will learn about:
- the security required when using a computer
- the dangers that can be found on social media and the internet
- how to report and react to others inappropriate use of computers
- British laws relating to the use of computers such as the Copyright and Patents Act.
