Careers

We believe that our Careers Education and Information, Advice and Guidance should provide:

Comprehensive up-to-date careers information

All students are given the opportunity to attend a careers convention which offers education training and employment information.

Information, Advice and Guidance

This is impartial, up-to-date, easily accessible and supports students in making informed career decisions.

A Careers Education Programme

The programme is built on the basis that students need a variety of skills, knowledge, support and experience of work in order that they can make the right career choices.

Equality of opportunity

This is incorporated in all our work.

We have an independent Careers Adviser, Mrs. Chris Blackie, that comes into school two days a week to interview students and advice them on their post-16 and post-18 options.

Every year we hold a Careers Fair in October with over 60 contributors from universities, colleges and industry attending.  Years 8 to 13 students are invited to attend with their parents so they can start thinking about and gathering information about their career pathways.

Work Related Learning

Year 10 students participate in the Enterprise for Education Day which gives them a 'taster' about how to run a business.  In addition there is an Insight into Industry day when representatives from different sectors of industry run different activities for the students.  This is a house event and the students are competing for the Parents' Society House Cup.

In Personal, Social, Health, and Economic Education lessons students learn employability skills.

In the Sixth Form there is a three-day course for Year 12 students them insight into Management in addition to a Higher Education day on site and a visit to the Higher Education Fair.  There is also a day when they learn life skills in preparation for university or work.

This section of the website contains information for students and parents about pathways within and beyond Brentwood County High School.

Our careers section will help you to consider key skills for developing a successful career, including CV writing, application writing, interview techniques and useful contacts.

Our Information, Advice and Guidance (IAG) section provides details of next steps at each stage of your learning.  Examples of information in this section include; pathways information into Key Stage 4 and Key Stage 5 choices and destination types, National Careers Service links and many more.

Our careers team at school is experienced in various aspects of offering advice and guidance and are supported by the wider staff of the school and a range of external partners and agencies.

We are constantly reviewing our careers provision and utilise many local agencies to help us deliver our programme such as The Essex Apprenticeship Hub and Make Happen. We evaluate our work regularly in many ways including:

Analysing our annual destination data for Y11 and Y13
Conducting Student Voice sessions with our Student parliament
Surveys such as the SHEU Survey (which has careers questions embedded within it)
Evaluations of our events, trips and employer engagements
Working towards nationally recognised standards such as the RoQA and Essex Careers Awards
