Design Technology Construction (DTC) is a practical and valuable subject. At BCHS, our vision is that DTC enables every pupil to actively contribute to the creativity, culture, wealth and well-being of themselves, their community and their nation. DTC teaches and encourages pupils how to take risks and so become more resourceful, resilient, innovative, enterprising and capable.

BCHS Students will develop a critical understanding of the impact design technology and construction can have on daily life and the wider world. Additionally, it provides excellent opportunities for students to develop and apply valued judgements of an aesthetic, economic, moral, social, and technical nature both in their own designing but also when evaluating the work of others. Our hope is that all students will enjoy the experience of this curriculum area through their entire learning journey at Brentwood County High School.

All pupils in KS3 have the opportunity to study a range of projects. Each project in KS3 has a specific DTC focus, which range from Resistant Materials to Graphics, with some projects incorporating key CAD/CAM SKILLS using 2D Design™. Each KS3 Project had been specifically chosen to develop and enhance the learning and understanding of a modern DTC curriculum. Pupils work on individual projects as well as working in project teams to again develop their leadership and team building skills.

KS4 provides learners with an opportunity to continue their DTC studies and we offer a very engaging and practical curriculum to study WJEC Construction and the Built Environment. This subject area gives students a broad introduction to the different trades involved in the sector, the importance of safety and security, and the types of career opportunities available within the construction industry while taking on three practical tasks during their KS4 journey.

At KS5 we offer an extended certificate level 3 BTEC in Construction and the Built Environment. This option offers the students the chance to continue their studies into post 16 education and equip them for university life and perhaps careers in the professional construction sector. This option would be highly engaging for pupils interested in building management, architecture or a range of opportunities the construction industry can offer.

In addition to our curriculum we have also developed working partnered links with the CITB (Construction Industry Training Board) Go CONSTRUCT and Bowmer & Kirkland which provides opportunities to our pupils to progress onto full time apprenticeships upon competition of KS5. The department enjoys excellent well-resourced classrooms / workshops which include a range of high quality machinery, hand tools and some CAD/CAM equipment throughout.

How do we contribute to PHSEE, British Values and SMSC?

As a subject, DTC encourages our valued students to understand fundamental British Values and how DTC can influence an appreciation of others beliefs and opinions and having respect for new ideas and products that are created. Across our broad curriculum, students learn how to appreciate different cultures and needs within our society, which therefore affects how we design and realise products and construction projects.

On their learning journey, DTC students understand legislation regarding the health and safety laws,  product safety standards and we also deep dive into areas of sustainability in design, Eco-design, green design, the 6 R’s and explore the social impact of housing design. We have regular industry tool box talks to support the values of a working life and support the development of growth mind-sets for all. DTC pupils are encouraged to take risks with their designs, which in turn advances them into resourceful, innovative, enterprising and capable citizens.
